Sustainable Creations Exhibition
May 2, 2026 - June 13, 2026

Curator: Renée Richetts, San Diego County Art and Culture Commissioner
Step into a powerful and thought-provoking exhibition where creativity meets responsibility—an eco-friendly art show featuring works made from at least 60% reclaimed, recycled, or reused materials. Each piece has been carefully curated not only for its artistic merit but for its commitment to sustainability, reminding us that art can be a force for change. In a world with finite resources, reimagining what we discard is no longer optional—it’s essential. The idea of “throwing something away” is a myth; there is no magical away. What we toss ends up in oceans, forests, and habitats, endangering wildlife and poisoning the ecosystems we all depend on. This exhibition challenges us to see beauty in what others overlook and calls on each of us to take responsibility—to do what we can, with what we have, and to transform waste into something that inspires, uplifts, and protects the world we share.

Curator’s Biography
Renée Richetts is an American artist best known for her hinged, metal books and eco-fashions created from upcycled materials. Her mixed-media sculptures and Artist’s Books are on public display throughout the year, and in public collection locally in the U.C.S.D. Geisel Special Collection. Her fashion designs are a regular presence at runway shows in Chicago and San Diego.
As a member of the San Diego County Arts and Culture Commission, Richetts has had the honor of reviewing work submitted from San Diego creatives for purchase by the County. She served as a member of the selection team for the new Public Health Laboratory on the County site in Kearney Mesa.
Richetts is also an RN. She knows that creating art enhances the creator’s well-being and emotional health. For over 25 years she has been facilitating art workshops to relieve stress, restore a sense of calm, and to help others use the process of creating visual art to express feelings that have few or no words.
Curator’s statement
I don’t remember ever not using recycled, re-used and repurposed materials to create 3-D art. I just didn’t have the ecological context for it until the 60’s when I read Rachel Carson’s The Sea Around Us.
Fast forward to now, and I am still motivated by making thoughtful, weird, calming 3-D art from what many would call useless stuff. I’m also very directly mindful of keeping our oceans clean, the landfill not so full, and our air breathable. Reduce, reuse, recycle is my lifestyle.
May it be yours, too.
