Humankind - John Terlip

"This piece, Humankind, embodies the vibrant cultures and ancient history of Africa as part of an exhibition called the "Seven Continents".  A tall, hand-built ceramic drum, its surface adorned with sculpted tribal faces, resonates with the rhythms and traditions of the continent.  Presiding over the drum is the sculpted head of an Egyptian pharaoh, a powerful symbol of Africa's ancient civilizations. Letting the glazing and surface textures evoke thoughts of original materials and found antiquities.
