Biography

Helen Shafer Garcia is a painter, mixed media, book artist, ceramicist, and award-winning illustrator. For more than 40 years, Helen’s watercolor illustrations have graced the covers of brochures, garden articles, and advertisements of numerous international resorts and magazines. Awards include four San Diego Press Club First Place Awards of Excellence in Illustration for San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles Magazine. Helen’s has been heavily involved in art education: from community colleges, the Oceanside Museum of Art school, where she also served as outreach director, and the Fallbrook School of the Arts, where she serves as Department Head of painting, drawing, and mixed media. She also leads watermedia and book arts workshops internationally, including New Zealands, France, Mexico, and Canada, and across the US. Helen co-curated the Fallbrook Art Center's 2025 Southwest Exhibition. Helen holds a B.A. degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis in illustration and ceramics. She is a signature member of San Diego Watercolor Society.
